Global trade dynamics of sesame seeds and emerging markets for functional food products: A brief overview
Mekdes Alemu, Kenji Nakamura and Ayşen Korkmaz
The global trade landscape for sesame seeds has experienced significant transformation over the past decade due to rising consumer interest in nutrient-dense foods, diversification of functional food markets, and strategic export expansion by major producing countries. Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.), traditionally valued for its high oil quality and shelf stability, has gained contemporary relevance as a functional ingredient enriched with lignans, antioxidants, and bioactive compounds that support metabolic, cardiovascular, and immunological health. Consequently, demand for sesame-based functional food products has accelerated in regions such as East Asia, North America, and the Middle East, intensifying competition and stimulating new trade partnerships. Although African and Asian nations remain dominant suppliers, evolving tariff policies, fluctuating production cycles, and quality compliance regulations continue to shape global market dynamics.
This article provides a concise overview of the emerging trends that influence sesame seed trade, with emphasis on production variability, shifting consumer preferences, value-addition potential, and the growing role of functional food industries in market development. The paper identifies critical bottlenecks, including inconsistent quality standards, limited processing infrastructure in producing nations, and vulnerability to climate-related disruptions. It further highlights how digital trade platforms, traceability systems, and health-driven marketing strategies are redefining sesame’s global commercial value.
The analysis synthesizes existing literature to examine how health-oriented product innovations—such as sesame protein isolates, fortified spreads, nutraceutical blends, and ready-to-eat functional snacks—are expanding market frontiers. The discussion also outlines opportunities for developing economies to leverage sesame’s functional attributes for export competitiveness, enhance post-harvest processing, and integrate sustainability measures within global supply chains. Ultimately, the article positions sesame seeds as a strategically relevant commodity within the expanding functional food sector and underscores the need for coordinated policy, technological intervention, and market intelligence to strengthen trade resilience and capitalize on emerging high-value markets.
